Everything people ask us before their first visit: where we are, how long a set of Gel-X or lash extensions actually lasts, what a head spa involves, and how to tell a clean pedicure setup from one that only looks clean. Nails: what to expect

Gel-X is a soft-gel extension system. A pre-shaped, full-cover tip is bonded to the natural nail with gel and cured under an LED lamp. Because the tip covers the entire nail plate, the natural nail does not need to be filed down to make the extension stick. A Gel-X set normally lasts three to four weeks before it needs a fill or a soak-off.

A regular manicure uses air-dry polish: touch-dry in minutes, fully hard in about an hour, and it typically looks good for five to seven days. A gel manicure uses polish cured under a UV or LED lamp, so it is completely hard before you leave the chair and usually keeps its shine for two to three weeks. Gel has to be soaked off with acetone rather than wiped off with remover.

Dip powder is safe when it is applied hygienically. The risk is not the powder itself but shared jars — dipping one client’s finger into a communal pot and then the next client’s can move bacteria between them. The safe method is to pour the powder over the nail onto a clean surface and never tip it back into the jar. It is a fair thing to ask about at any salon.

Have it soaked off — never picked or peeled. Peeling pulls layers off the nail plate with the product and leaves the nail thin and sensitive for weeks. A proper soak-off means filing through the top coat, wrapping each nail in acetone for 10 to 15 minutes, then gently pushing the softened product off with a wooden stick.

Lashes and head spa

The menu lists a 2-week fill for each lash set (classic $80+, hybrid $95+, volume $120+, mega volume $140+). Natural lashes shed on their own cycle, so most people book a fill every two to three weeks. Leaving it much past four weeks usually means paying for a full set again instead of a cheaper fill.

A full set of classic extensions usually takes around two hours, because one extension is attached to one natural lash. Volume sets take longer: several ultra-fine extensions are fanned onto each natural lash. A fill is normally 60 to 90 minutes. You will be lying down with your eyes closed for the whole appointment, so it is worth arriving relaxed.

A head spa is a scalp-focused treatment rather than a haircut. The scalp is cleansed and exfoliated, then massaged, steamed and shampooed, finishing with a conditioning treatment and a blow-dry. It is done lying back in a shampoo chair. At Marvelous the three lengths on the menu are Gold 60 min ($95), Zen 75 min ($115) and Diamond 90 min ($150). The goal is scalp health and deep relaxation.

Hygiene and licensing

Yes. The Nevada State Board of Cosmetology licenses both individual nail technicians and the salons they work in, and state law requires current licences to be displayed where clients can see them. If you cannot spot a licence near the front desk of any salon, you are entitled to ask to see it.

Two things to look for: pipeless (jetless) pedicure basins and single-use files and buffers. Older jetted tubs pull water through internal plumbing that is very hard to disinfect properly. A pipeless basin has no hidden pipes, so every surface that touched the water can be scrubbed and disinfected between clients. Files and buffers are porous and cannot truly be disinfected, so they should be new for each client.
